Collaborations with Studio Tomás Saraceno  2022 / 2023

In fall of 2022 I was contacted by Studio Tomás  Saraceno. They were looking for someone who can make wooden spiders for Tomás Saracenos new project Web(s) of life.

As neither the number nor the design of those spiders was clear at the beginning, I was invited to meet Tomás at his studio. One design element of his project was to set at least three spiders in different sizes on the top of a confessional. It was a great honor for me discussing the possible solutions with him and learn more about his ideas and visions.

Once it became clear  what Tomás had in mind, I started making the prototype. One challenge was that it was not possible for Tomás to determine the posture of the spiders before they were available. Therefor they needed movable legs, hence I equipped the prototype with four joints per leg to give the artist the opportunity  to freely decide the postion during the final installation.

After finalizing the design and checking the positioning of the first spider it was agreed upon making a really large one for the center and a mid-sized for the other corner. The following process of creating the final product was quite challenging. 3 spiders, 24 legs, composed out of 4 segments each. In total 96 individual leg-segments held together by 96 moveable joints. The design of the bodies should follow the pattern of the confessional, here are some impressions:

In close cooperation with Studio Tomás Saraceno and above of all Manuela Mazure Azcona, the very professional, cooperative and friendly Art Project Manager there, we managed to finish the work on time. End of April 2023, the three spiders started their journey to London as part of the shipping-set for the Web(s) of life installation. The exhibition took place at the Serpentine South Gallery located at Kensington Gardens from  June 1 until Septmber.

I went to London together with my daughter Lena and visted the exhibition. I was overwhelmed seeing the result of my work being a little part of Tomás amazing installation on such an incredilble place.  We also attended the panel-discussion "Towards An Ecosocial Energy Transition" held at the London Goethe-Institute on the day of the opening.

I'm greatful for getting to work with Tomás and the opportunity to learn more about his ideas and ambitious projects which aim to protect the environment and support disadvantaged groups!

Below are a few photos from our visit to London:

2023  Life(s) of Webs by Tomás Saraceno

In July 2023 Studio Tomás Saraceno contacted me with a further request. Another confessional, another spider. Because of the short term schedule it was finally agreed upon only one spider for the top center of the confessional. The installation was made for the National Museum  of Matera, the place for the permanent exhibition is Chiesa Madonna del Carmine, Palazzo Lanfranchi.

Studio Tomás Saraceno experts again modified the confessional, I built the required spider. The official opening of the installation took place on November 25, for details please follow the link: Life(s) of Webs Matera Basilicatah

Again, it was an amazing expierience for me and I'm proud that my work as part of Tomás incredible project is now placed at this wonderfull location and can be viewed by countless visitors.

Here are a few impressions from the process of creating this spider:
